Oregon State ADVANCE Principal Investigators Becky Warner, Professor of Sociology, Oregon State University, and Susan Shaw, Professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Oregon State University, were invited to present on the ADVANCE seminar at The Ohio State University on April 2nd 2018. Like Oregon State University, The Ohio State University is a receiptiant of an NSF ADVANCE grant. Ohio State ADVANCE aims to impact the advancement of women in STEMM, and to be a global leader for the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in the academy.

Warner and Shaw presented an overview of the Oregon State ADVANCE program, which involves a 54-hour intensive immersion seminar focused on issues of difference, power, and discrimination. Workshop participants then engaged in activities that explored the importance of understanding intersectionality for disrupting the normative workings of gender that maintain systems of oppression and privilege. The workshop was sponsored by the underrepresentation in STEM group of the Humanities & Arts Discovery Theme Science and Technology Studies project, with co-sponsorship of Ohio State ADVANCE, The Women’s Place, and Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
