The OREGON STATE ADVANCE research project aims to demonstrate that shifts toward more positive and affirming interpersonal interactions will occur when people develop a critical consciousness (Freire, 1993). Fostering this sort of critical awareness is especially important for transforming the climates at predominately white institutions where lived experiences of faculty of color, LGBTQ faculty, and faculty with disabilities often remain invisible to those in the dominant paradigm.
This leads to our primary research question: Will participating in the ADVANCE summer seminar empower and motivate institutional leaders and faculty members to actively contribute to institutional climate transformation (through improving their interpersonal interactions)?
