Eligibility

The ADVANCE Seminar Train-the-Trainer program for non-OSU participants is available on a first-come, first-served basis for all applicants from academic institutions. There are 15 seats available. People who might benefit from this training include tenure-track faculty, administrators, and professional faculty. We encourage collaborative pairings or teams of STEM faculty with faculty in Liberal Arts and Social and/or Behavioral Sciences disciplines whose work focuses on dismantling systems of oppression and advancing social justice.

Program Description

The OREGON STATE ADVANCE seminar has been the centerpiece of our NSF Institutional Transformation (IT) grant project. It is an interactive learning experience centered on analyzing the operations of difference, power, and privilege in higher education, with particular attention to STEM disciplines. The seminar provides opportunities to explore structural inequities within the university and to imagine a transformed future in which institutional structures and personal behaviors are both professionally and personally life-affirming for people across their differences.

Week one will focus on the operations of gender, race/ethnicity, ability, social class, sexual identity, and religious difference in the context of an institution of higher education, with a particular focus on STEM disciplines. The seminar will ask you to apply what you learn to your own work context and spheres of influence to identify ways you can help the institution transform toward greater inclusivity, equity, and justice.

Week two will focus on both the theoretical underpinnings of the seminar and the pedagogical methods used to deliver the content such as large and small group discussions, short videos, Theater of the Oppressed exercises, skills practices, challenging questions, and personal storytelling. There will be time for reflecting and debriefing, and you’ll create an action plan focused on delivering ADVANCE seminar content in your sphere of influence.
